The dog caretaker is responsible for delivering high quality animal husbandry, welfare, and healthcare support for domestic species within the Kennels department. The role ensures strict compliance with welfare policies, SOPs, hygiene protocols, and line managers’ instructions. The position supports Kennels team in daily operations, maintains high standards in enclosures and facilities, monitors animal health and behavior, prepares diets, and ensures safe handling of animals.
JOB LOCATION: FUJAIRAH, UAE
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent – Mandatory
- Certificate or diploma in animal care, veterinary assistance, zoology, or related field – Desirable
- Basic first aid or animal first aid certification – Desirable
- 2+ years’ experience working with dogs in a professional capacity.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Demonstrate a genuine passion and respect for dogs of all breeds.
- Observe and interpret dog behavior and body language to understand individual needs.
- Identify and report any health or behavioral concerns to the line manager.
- Carry out visual health and behavioral assessments weekly.
- Implement and follow species-specific best husbandry practices.
- Clean, disinfect, and maintain all animal enclosures daily, following SOPs.
- Maintain accurate records (feeding, treatments, behavior, inventories).
- Prepare and provide food according to each dog’s specific dietary needs.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date feeding records.
- Assist with training sessions under the guidance of animal trainers.
- Maintain and reinforce training standards as per the approved program.
- Participate in rescue or emergency operations as needed.
- Exercise patience, especially with stubborn or nervous dogs.
- Effectively communicate with team members, trainers, and veterinary staff.
KEY SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE:
- Good verbal and written communication skills in English – mandatory.
- Basic knowledge and understanding of animal welfare, and husbandry principles.
- Animal handling skills and experience of different breeds and sizes.
- Ability to recognise normal vs. abnormal behaviour and early signs of illness.
- Understanding of hygiene, sanitation, and disinfection protocols.
- Ability to follow SOPs, and safety procedures meticulously.
- Emotional intelligence and calm demeanour when working with animals in distress.
- Teamwork, reliability, and effective communication skills.
- Awareness of occupational health and safety risks, PPE use, and safe handling of animals.
- Understanding of biosecurity and quarantine principles.
